Relive the Careful Cobber Era at the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre

Two of these iconic cars have made their way into the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre, where they will be on display until 31 January, 2025. Whether you’re revisiting a cherished piece of your childhood or experiencing the Cobbers for the first time, this exhibit is a must-see.

If you were a primary school student in Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley from the late 1970s to 2008, chances are you eagerly awaited your turn to drive a Careful Cobber at DECA (Driver Education Centre of Australia). These miniature cars weren’t just a fun afternoon activity—they were part of an innovative road safety program that taught children essential driving and pedestrian skills in a controlled environment.

The Careful Cobber program was a beloved rite of passage for local students, offering them a hands-on way to learn about road rules. Over the years, it became a core memory for many in the region. Even royalty got in on the action—one of the Careful Cobbers now on display was driven by King Charles during his visit with Princess Diana in 1985!

To enhance the experience, children can enjoy various activities, including colouring, play cars, and a mock driving area complete with road signs. Additionally, visitors can explore displays detailing the history of the Careful Cobber driving program.
